3 defensive schemes that Dak Prescott should worry about heading into 2022

3. Cover Three Zone Defensive Schemes

The cover three defense was also used quite a bit against the Dallas offense. Teams dropping back three players into a deep shell forces Prescott to make more underneath throws. You may assume that would be good for a  conservative quarterback, but his lack of making the quick read at times allowed teams to have success deploying it.

Prescott needs to be able to make that quick read for underneath routes in this defense with the strong safety and a linebacker normally the two positions covering those underneath routes.

His receivers should be able to get an early advantage on the slower defenders, but it’s up to Prescott to trust his receivers and make the throw. There will be times when a nickel corner will be there, but making a quick read and getting the ball out quickly is going to be what this team needs to beat this coverage. That or he’s going to need to trust his legs again and use them to force defenses to start bringing more pressure from linebackers in order to open up the field for his receivers.
