Jason Garrett may have been fired from many NFL coaching jobs in the last couple of years, but he seems to already be in line for a promotion just a few months after starting his broadcasting career. The former Dallas Cowboys head coach has been spending his time since getting fired from the New York Giants as a color analyst for USFL football with NBC. Back in April, it was revealed that Garrett would be joining Jac Collinsworth (play-by-play), Paul Burmeister (play-by-play), Michael Robinson (analyst), and Cam Jordan (analyst) on the NBC broadcast team for the start-up spring football league.

Now, with rumors that former Saints QB turned broadcaster Drew Brees could be leaving the network, Garrett’s name has been thrown into the replacement ring. This would make Garrett the new game analyst for Notre Dame football coverage on NBC, and possibly (according to the NY Post) a broadcaster on “Football Night in America.” Brees didn’t necessarily confirm or deny the reports. He remained neutral saying that he was still unsure about his decision and could return to football or pickleball or television. Not helpful, Drew.

Given the success of former Cowboys in television such as Troy Aikman, Tony Romo, and Jimmy Johnson, the Garrett never really seemed like an obvious fit for broadcasting. He was a bit dull and also wasn’t an entirely successful head coach. Yet, the 56-year-old persisted and is already being considered for a higher importance role after just one USFL season in the booth.

This is good news for Garrett who likely won’t be getting any major offers for coaching jobs any time soon. Solidifying his broadcasting career is probably a better move, and the fact that he’s already in with NBC certainly helps.

If Garrett were to join the Notre Dame broadcasts, he’d likely work alongside Collinsworth, who happens to be a graduate of the school. Collinsworth is replacing Mike Tirico who will now be taking over Al Michaels’ role in Sunday Night Football now that Michaels is headed to Amazon. Quite the sports media shuffle we’ve had in 2022! There’s also a chance that FOX is trying to poach Brees away from NBC as their No. 2 analyst. Obviously, neither network has given any official word on any of these reports.

The USFL season is set to have its championship game on July 3. Could Garrett be continuing as a broadcaster into the fall? He certainly seems like a far cry from the likability and personality of Brees, but NBC seems to like the former Cowboys coach.
