Peter King surprisingly ranks Eagles way above Cowboys in power rankings
In 2021, the NFC East was a breeze for the Dallas Cowboys. Washington toggled between two inexperienced quarterbacks. Philadelphia was dealing with constant injuries and COVID concerns. And, the Giants were without Daniel Jones and only managed to win four games, The Cowboys swept the division, which not only earned them a playoff spot but also added an easy six wins to their 12-game win total for the season.
The problem? The Eagles, Giants, and Commanders didn’t seem to like that all that much. The last time a team swept the division was seventeen years earlier in 2004 and the only other time it happened before that was by the Cowboys back in 1998. Philly, New York, and Washington don’t want to see that happen again – especially Philadelphia who was the last team to win the division multiple seasons in a row back in 2004.
So, what did the Cowboys’ enemies do? They had impressive offseasons. All three teams drafted incredibly well and made serious changes on both sides of the ball while the Cowboys made more in-house moves than external moves. This was particularly the case for the Eagles. Howie Roseman did his job this offseason. The biggest hope for the Cowboys is that the Eagles still have Jalen Hurts at quarterback. Around him, Philly has added James Bradberry, A.J. Brown, Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean, Haason Reddick, and Kyzir White to their roster since February.
It’s hard to argue that those moves weren’t an emphatic response by Roseman and his team. The Cowboys, on the other hand, added three external signings: Ryan Nall, James Washington, and Dante Fowler Jr. These facts are the reason why NFL writer Peter King surprisingly has Philadelphia ranked a whopping six spots ahead of Dallas in his latest NFL Power Rankings.
Peter King ranks the Eagles six spots ahead of the Cowboys in his latest NFL power rankings
King has the Eagles at No. 9 and the Cowboys at No. 15, and he deems the primary reason for this the offseason changes. Here is a quote from the article:
"“I picked the Eagles ahead of Dallas because the Eagles got significantly better this offseason and Dallas worse, with the subtraction of two key contributors (Amari Cooper and Randy Gregory) and the addition of none. Oh, and the two best pieces of protection for Prescott, tackle Tyron Smith and guard Zack Martin, both turn 32 this season and have missed 26 games, combined, due to injury the last two years.”"
The writer genuinely believes the Eagles are better on both sides of the ball and that the team has a chance to win games in mid-January. He has Philadelphia ranked above teams like the 49ers, Titans, Broncos, Patriots, and Colts simply because of how different the Eagles’ roster will look in 2022. Although (as of today) our partners at WynnBet still have the Cowboys at -110 to win the NFC East (Eagles are at +220), it seems like analysts and reporters are starting to feel that Philly is inching in.
"“What I like about what the Eagles have done this offseason is this: They’ve created a team with a legitimate chance of winning now, with a legitimate offense to make a judgment on Jalen Hurts as the future quarterback. GM Howie Roseman has done it while still retaining enough pieces for the future to address the quarterback position if he needs in 2023. Roseman has three picks in the first two rounds next year, and three picks in the first two rounds of 2024. He’s done his job: He’s built a team for 2022, and he’s built a team that can do a U-turn in 2023 if need be.”"
