3 roster bubble candidates the Cowboys should keep an eye on
3. Jamaal Williams, Running Back
Height: 6’0″ Weight: 224lbs
Career Stats: 653 rushes for 2,586 yards, 4.0 yards per carry average, 148 receptions for 1,118 yards, 21 total touchdowns
Williams is coming off a pretty nice first year with the Detriot Lions after spending his entire career with their division rivals the Green Bay Packers. But even with a good season, the Lions’ cap space isn’t the greatest in the league and they could look to make more room by letting some good players go, including Williams.
The Lions already have D’Andre Swift to carry the load as the starter and got pretty good output from the likes of Craig Reynolds, Godwin Igwebuike, and Jermar Jefferson. The output out of those three alone could give the Lions a reason to move on from the more expensive Williams.
This should be a no-brainer for the Cowboys if they are concerned about their running back depth or potential depth after the 2022 season. They haven’t done anything to lock up Tony Pollard and both Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle are returning from knee injuries. Wiliams would be a nice fit for this roster with this ability to run, catch, and pass block. His prior relationship with head coach Mike McCarthy could help the Cowboys make a move.
