If you missed the Dallas Cowboys pre-draft press conference on Tuesday, you missed a lot of the usual Stephen and Jerry Jones trying to spin things and explain themselves out of poor situations. Nothing new. One particular thing that did stand out from the presser, though, was when Jerry tried to make a joke at former Cowboys DE Taco Charlton’s expense in order to take a jab at his son. We’d just like to add that this is also when Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner, referred to the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year as “Micah Parson” (without the S) three times.

Anyway! Let’s rewind a bit. Charlton was a first-round selection by the Cowboys in the 2017 NFL Draft at 28th overall. In two years with the Cowboys, he only had seven starts. The team’s defensive coordinator at the time, Rod Marinelli, pushed hard for Charlton to be selected, but the two ended up not getting along very well. He was listed inactive for the first two games of 2019 before getting released. The worst part? Reigning Defensive Player of the Year, T.J. Watt, was taken two picks after Charlton. The former Cowboy is often referred to as one of the worst picks by Dallas.

Back to this week. On Tuesday, Jerry tried to make the press laugh by saying that Stephen was responsible for the Charlton pick and he picked Parsons. In other words, Jerry makes the good choices around the front office. Reporters laughed, but Stephen said it wasn’t very funny. Charlton tweeted out a hilarious GIF of Woody Harrelson crying into a pile of money to convey that he didn’t really seem to care.

Here’s where it gets even better. Last night, the Cowboys shocked many by selecting Tulsa OT Tyler Smith as their 24th overall pick. Smith was often graded as a second-round pick and had a large number of penalties in his time at Tulsa. The pick was a chin scratcher at best. Charlton took the moment as an opportunity to get back at the Joneses for making him the butt of their joke. He sent out the tweet below after the Dallas selection.

It seems like the now-Saints DE was a bit underwhelmed by the pick as well. Charlton did later tweet that he was just trying to make jokes and was going back to “minding his own business,” but this was certainly a hilarious moment amidst a bit of an uproar from Cowboys fans.

After a dismal offseason, the one semblance of hope left in Dallas fans was a great first-round draft pick. On the surface, Smith didn’t seem like that. He is a raw talent who has a lot of fine-tuning work to do before he can succeed in the NFL. However, his strength, aggressiveness, size, and power certainly lend themselves to a talented offensive lineman. The front office is likely hoping he will be next in line when 31-year-old tackle Tyron Smith eventually retires.

The Joneses claim they had their eyes on Smith all along, but as always, it’s hard to know what to believe with those guys. Hopefully, the front office doesn’t give Charlton any more revenge ammo in the remaining rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.
