How Will the Cowboys Secure Thibodeaux?

It will be difficult to make trade scenarios because we don’t know how far Thibodeaux will fall. I will make trade packages for a trade into the top 5, 6-10, and 10-15. I will do this by using Draft Tek’s Draft Pick Value Chart to determine what picks I can package to trade up.

Cowboys trade up to pick No. 4

This may make some Dallas fans cringe. Trading next year’s first-round pick along with pick No. 24 could make this an immediate veto for some, especially when we are also sending recently signed DE Dorance Armstrong Jr. in the deal as well.

People need to remember, though, this is a jump into the top five, and a jump ahead of the division rival and edge-needy New York Giants. The pick values check out and we still make it out with our remaining picks in the draft. Yes, the loss of next year’s first hurts, but given Thibodeaux’s All-Pro upside, it could be worth it.

For the Jets, this works out for them as they get a young, promising pass rusher, add in a second first for next season, and still have their 10th and now 24th overall selections to address other areas of need.

Cowboys trade up to pick No. 9

If Thibodeaux falls to the bottom of the top 10 and the Jets decide to go a different way than edge rusher at four, this is where the ‘Boys need to trade up. If the 21-year-old is on the board at 10, it is more than likely the Jets opt on the star defensive end.

In this scenario, the team gives up the first and second round picks this season as well as Armstrong. While this is still a big package, it’s also a big jump into the top 10. The team gets to keep their first-round pick next season but has to forfeit their second-round selection in the process, which could be costly due to other holes at receiver and guard.

For Seattle, they continue to add draft capital to expedite their rebuild and add a starting edge rusher in Armstrong. This package is more likable if Kayvon can fall to nine, but still expensive in it’s own right.

Cowboys trade up to pick 12

This is my favorite package. Letting go of pick 56 is hard, but it is what it would take to secure a potential All-Pro. Here, the team jumps in front of the Texans, Ravens, and Eagles to ensure they get Thibodeaux.

The team gets pick 12 in exchange for picks 24, 56, and cornerback Anthony Brown. Brown has been inconsistent in his play and Dallas could add him in to the deal to sweeten up the package for Minnesota. The secondary had other young players and they shouldn’t miss AB too much with Trevon Diggs, Jourdan Lewis, Kelvin Joseph, and Nahshon Wright also in the room.

For the Vikings, they get secondary help while also getting an extra second round pick to continue to help Kirk Cousins make a run in a weak NFC. They would most certainly consider the idea as the draft is considerably deeper than previous years and they would love to add an extra pick, especially if they miss out on a top corner.
