The Dallas Cowboys head into the 2022 NFL Draft in a very enviable position. Though they didn’t live up to the expectations last season, an all too familiar feeling in the last decade or so, they were one of the most talented and explosive teams in the league last season at their peak.

However, the little things such as penalties, discipline, and a lack of an ability to do the most fundamental things when they mattered the most ended their season early. Fundamentals are the most primitive and basic essentials in the game of football. Any great football mind, coach, or player will tell you that the game is won up front. That goes for both sides as well.

When you think about an offense, the ability to protect the quarterback and be able to grind out 3-5 yards or more per carry on offense in the biggest moments are what wins big in the NFL. These are facts. Because of this, the Cowboys need to truly focus on both the offensive and defensive line this draft. Adding talent to both fronts will only help the quarterback, running backs, and other players succeed more.

The Dallas Cowboys need more offensive and defensive line talent for their top-end guys

Defensively, a team cannot succeed without having guys who have the ability to stop the other team from gaining ground and threatening the quarterback. There are several reasons offensive and defensive line help are needed. The offensive line as a whole massively struggled last year and has for the past couple. The defensive line struggled to get to the quarterback. And, the numerous penalties on both sides cannot continue. The Wild Card Round playoff game truly showed how penalties can ruin a game.

There is also the mere need of it all. With La’el Collins, Randy Gregory, and Connor Williams all gone, there are certainly holes to fill on both fronts. That puts Dallas in an even worse position than it was in January.

So, yes, there will be scenarios where there are guys at other positions that are just too good to pass up because of the uber talent that may present itself. However, the front of each unit is where the focus should be. Hopefully, Jerry Jones doesn’t pull any shenanigans and mess this up.

Even though Jerry Jones lives to be a “contrarian,” even he can’t mess this one up. Or can they? It all boils down to this, though, and they should know it. If you can’t keep your $40 million dollar man off of his back and healthy, that’s a major issue. Likewise, if you can’t get to the other team’s signal-caller, then that’s just as big a problem. And it’s really that simple. Despite several needs across the roster, the offensive line and defensive line should be top priorities.
