The 20 best draft picks in Dallas Cowboys history
At number four is mauler Larry Allen. In 1994, Dallas selected Allen in the second round of the draft and started him at right tackle. The team moved him into right guard the season after and he quickly became one of the best guards in the league.
The former 46th overall pick made seven straight Pro Bowls, six AP first-teams, and one AP second team from 1995-2001. He was a key to the Cowboys’ two Super Bowl wins in 1994 and 1996. Allen finished with 11 Pro Bowl appearances and is regarded as one of the best guards of all time. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013 after retiring in 2007.
The second of “The Triplets” lands third on this list: Emmitt Smith. A man who is arguably the greatest running back in NFL history.
Smith was selected in the first round with high expectations and he did not disappoint. He immediately went to work, rushing for just under 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns helping him win Offensive Rookie of the Year and earning his first of many Pro Bowl invitations.
Emmitt would go on to have 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons, leading the league in yards in four of those seasons. The all-time rushing yard leader was one of the most important pieces to the Cowboys’ reign in the 1990s, helping them to three Super Bowl victories.
The Hall of Famer finished his career with over 18,000 rushing yards, 164 touchdowns (most in NFL history), eight Pro Bowls, four first-team All-Pro selections, one second-team selection, and an MVP. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010, just six years after he retired.
