Cowboys mock draft: Dallas beefs up defense with all 9 picks and trades
Round 5, Pick 155: DL Eyioma Uwazurike
Although the team addressed the interior defensive line in round two with Leal, adding a monster like Eyioma Uwazurike would provide some help in a run defense that struggled mightily last season.
Uwazurike played all along the defensive line last season, similar to Leal, and was a force to be reckoned with in the passing game. He finished the season fourth in the Big 12 in sacks with nine, while also recording 29 QB hurries and five QB hits.
The Iowa State product was also an impactful run defender, finishing with 43 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and 19 stops. There are questions as to if he will be able to make an impact in the NFL due to athleticism issues. However, his production in college, size, and motor make this a safe pick for me in the fifth.
Other notable prospects available: S Yusuf Corker, CB Akayleb Evans, DL Otito Ogbonnia
Round 5, Pick 167: S Verone McKinley III
A fan-favorite throughout college football, Verone McKinley III is available in the fifth and this could be another hidden gem for the Cowboys.
The Oregon product was a ball hawk in the secondary, hauling in six interceptions for the Ducks last season and breaking up six other passes. McKinley makes quarterbacks pay for bad throws and excels in zone coverage.
The Oregon Duck has a bit of positional versatility as he can function in the slot in spurts. While he is a decent tackler, he could be better at wrapping up his defenders. With Jayron Kearse locking down the starting strong safety spot, McKinley could come in and immediately make a push to start over Donovan Wilson.
Other notable prospects available: S JT Woods, CB Montaric Brown, EDGE Domonique Robinson
Round 5, Pick 176: CB Jack Jones
A late-round sleeper in a solid cornerback class is Arizona State’s Jack Jones. Jones had a very good senior season for the Sun Devils, finishing with 41 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, including one for a touchdown, six pass deflections, and three forced fumbles.
The ASU alum can be overwhelmed by bigger receivers due to size concerns. He currently stands at 5-10, 175 pounds. However, this hasn’t stopped him from being a difference-maker.
Jones has inside-outside versatility and could be a solid depth pick in the late rounds. With some development, he could be a solid special teams contributor or even a decent slot corner.
Other notable prospects available: DL Haskell Garrett, DL Thomas Booker, CB Chase Lucas
