Cowboys mock draft: Dallas beefs up defense with all 9 picks and trades
TRADE!
Round 3, Pick 77: DE Sam Williams
With Sam Williams being one of the last remaining starting-caliber defensive ends on the board in round three, I had to make sure to secure him. Since the Cowboys have four fifth-round picks this season, I decided to send picks 88 and 178 to the Vikings to jump eleven spots for Williams.
The Ole Miss Rebel was one of the best pass rushers in the NCAA last season. He finished with 12.5 sacks, which was good for second in the SEC and fifth in all of college football. He also had 15 tackles for loss, which was second in the SEC, and four forced fumbles, which finished first in the SEC and ninth in college football.
The departure of Randy Gregory has left a bit of a hole at defensive end. Dante Fowler Jr. is a good addition, but he is not an equivalent talent. However, adding a player like Williams to a group consisting of Gholston, Fowler, Dorance Armstrong, and Tarell Basham could help make that corps even better in 2022.
Jerry Jones also appears to want to bring the Ole Miss product to Dallas. Williams claims Jones told him he “needs another Micah Parsons” and thinks Sam could be just that.
Williams is also a sound run defender who can set the edge. His improvement overall from his 2020 to 2021 year helped his stock tremendously. Adding Williams in the third round could end up being the steal of the draft if his college production translates.
