When the Dallas Cowboys decided to franchise tag starting tight end Dalton Schultz this offseason many were questioning the thought behind such a move for an above-average tight end. After it was revealed that fellow tight end Blake Jarwin was released due to injury, Dallas really didn’t have a choice and had to keep quarterback Dak Prescott’s most reliable target last season with the team.

Now, with the 2022 NFL Draft around the corner, the Cowboys could decide to make this a one-time deal for Schultz with such a deep tight end draft class.

We’ve seen how much of a liability Schultz can be in the running game with his below-average blocking skills. Because of this, the Cowboys may choose to take another tight end in the middle rounds who has the talent to be an offensive weapon for Prescott and is a developed pass blocker.  Hopefully, the team can find a better and cheaper option for the position. Because the Cowboys need to prioritize the OL and DL, a tight end would likely come in the middle rounds. Here are some options.

3 mid-round tight end prospect options the Cowboys should consider in the 2022 NFL Draft

Career Stats: 118 receptions, 1468 receiving yards, 12.4 yards per reception, 16 touchdowns

After a horrible Pro Day, the Cowboys have still decided to bring Jalen Wydermyer in for Dallas Day to get to know the player a little bit better and figure out if he’s someone they could draft. Wydermyer was a nice weapon for the Aggies.

He has speed, the ability to quickly gain ground on linebackers and safeties, and can break off routes leading to easy completions and touchdowns. Not only is he a good offensive threat in the passing game, but Wydermyer is a pretty good pass blocker too. That alone would make him an upgrade over Schultz pretty easily.

Dallas hasn’t had this type of offensive threat at the position since Jason Witten. We’ve also seen them draft a tight end from the Aggies in the past in Martellus Bennett back in the 2008 NFL Draft. Could they do it again?
