With the 2022 NFL Draft less than a month away, now is the time for the Dallas Cowboys to be zeroing in on potential targets. Soon, they will have named all 30 of their visit invites, and those are usually a good indicator of who could be the newest Cowboys.

With the offensive line seemingly the top need for the Cowboys heading into the draft, they will more than likely be looking to add one in the first round. But, after that, wide receivers should be next on their queue of positional needs. With the loss of Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson, this team needs more depth in the receiver corps.

This draft class is so deep at receiver that Dallas can find an impact player at the position in rounds two, three, or four. So let’s take a look at some mid-round guys who could play for the Cowboys.

3. Khalil Shakir, Boise State

Boise State has been and will continue to be a breeding ground for the Cowboys. Names like DeMarcus Lawrence, Leighton Vander Esch, Darian Thompson, and Cedrick Wilson all came from Boise State. So, it is all but a guarantee that Khalil Shakir will be near the top of the Cowboys’ draft board at receiver.

Shakir fits well in the Cowboys’ offense because he is a gadget guy that can be moved around the offense. He should spend most of his time as a slot receiver but he can also be used out of the backfield or taking jet sweeps.

At the NFL Combine, Shakir showed off his explosiveness, running a 4.43-second 40-yard dash and scoring a 124″ broad jump. His 2021 college stats include 77 catches for 1,117 yards and seven touchdowns. Also, he can make plenty of highlight plays as seen below.

The Boise State alum can make defenders miss with the best of them and he has a great pair of hands. He can even impact the game on special teams as soon as year one. Cowboys offensive coordinator and Boise State alumni, Kellen Moore, was present at Boise State’s Pro Day. That is another good indicator that the Cowboys will be interested in Shakir.

I think there is a good possibility that Shakir can make it to the Cowboys’ third-round pick (88th overall), and if that is the case, he should be considered as one of the top options at receiver.
