Cowboys set first official visit with draft target WR Treylon Burks
The Dallas Cowboys offseason is underway and the 2022 NFL Draft is just over a month away. In addition to cuts, trades, and free agent signings, all 32 NFL teams have to figure out who they will be going after in the draft. Ahead of the big day, each organization is allowed 30 prospect visits. According to Bobby Belt, a Cowboys insider for 105.3 The Fan, Arkansas WR Treylon Burks received the first invite available from Dallas.
These visits give the collegiate players a chance to mingle with coaches, front-office executives and scouts. During the visits, NFL hopefuls get to tour the team’s facilities, ask questions, and undergo a medical examination. While there is no guarantee that players who visit teams will ultimately end up with that organization, the invite is always telling of any given franchise’s plans.
The Burks selection is unsurprising for many reasons. The Razorback wideout stands at an impressive 6-3, 230 pounds, but his speed doesn’t falter despite his large stature. Add that to Jerry Jones’s ties to Arkansas and the pick makes a ton of sense. With Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson now absent from the wide receiver corps, Burks could be a starter in Dallas and help fill some much-needed gaps. The problem is predicting whether or not Burks will actually fall to the 24th overall pick.
Despite the fact that Dallas re-signed Noah Brown and picked up former Steelers WR James Washington, Burks would seemingly be an upgrade from either of those players. One of his biggest assets is his versatility. Burks has the ability to line up wherever he is needed in an offense (even lining up at RB a couple of times) and his tape shows NFL ability at a young age. The Arkansas product finished his collegiate career as a first-team ALL-SEC team member and set a school record with six 100+ yard receiving games.
The Cowboys selected Arkansas WR Treylon Burks as the first to receive one of their 30 visits. How would Burks fit in with the roster?
Thankfully, the Cowboys were able to re-sign Michael Gallup. However, there is still no guarantee that the currently-hurt WR can start Week 1. Burks would fill in seamlessly. Despite his large size, he has a huge catch radius and makes acrobatic receptions look simple. His yards after the catch (as seen above) are incredibly impressive and his ball tracking ability stands out amongst NCAA WR favorites. Burks’ route running, blocking, and contested-catch abilities make him a well-deserved first-round pick.
Right now, the wide receiver corps essentially sits at CeeDee Lamb, Gallup, Brown, Washington, and Simi Fehoko. If Burks were selected by the Cowboys, he would definitely have the ability to compete with Washington for the WR3 position. If not, he would be a welcome, talented WR4 in the absence of Wilson.
Will the Cowboys prioritize wide receiver with their first pick in this year’s draft? There is certainly a long list of other positional needs, but the offense does need some assistance. Getting the first visit from Dallas is a great start for Burks. According to NFL Network’s Jane Slater, the other players to get visit invites after Burks so far include Texas A&M OL Kenyon Green and Texas A&M DL DeMarvin Leal.
