Randy Gregory claims Cowboys fan base is ‘toxic’ in Twitter thread
It doesn’t seem like defensive end Randy Gregory is missing the Dallas Cowboys all that much. He’s already changed his Twitter account photo to a photoshopped picture of him in a Denver Broncos uniform. He shared a photo on Instagram of him at dinner with Broncos’ team executives thanking them for “believing in him.” Overall, he seems to be incredibly happy to be out of Dallas.
Part of that is likely because of how things ended with the front office. As a refresher, Gregory was supposed to sign with the Cowboys last week. A monetary number was agreed upon and things were all but complete. Then, the front office wanted to add a clause to his contract that would void any guarantees if he were fined or suspended. That didn’t sit well with Gregory, and he quickly fled to Denver for the same five-year, $70 million deal.
Not only does the former Cowboy seem to be happy to get away from Stephen and Jerry Jones, who he said “acted in bad faith” during the contract negotiations, but he also seems to be happy to get away from Cowboys Nation. Yikes. It all started when the now-Bronco posted a tweet that said, “Y’all opinions don’t pay my bills.”
That did not sit well with Dallas fans. Hundreds of people responded expressing anger for things like Gregory walking out on a team that kept him despite suspensions, reminding him that he would have had the same money from Dallas, and much more. The thread goes on for quite a while and Gregory responded to some fans. For the most part, he continued to express that he felt the fan base was “toxic” and seemed happy to tell people he felt that way. Here are some of the highlights from the thread.
Former Cowboys DE Randy Gregory said Jerry Jones “acted in bad faith” and that the franchise’s fan base is “toxic”
In this tweet, he responded to an angry fan who tried to blame him for leaving after being unwilling to follow one extra rule. Gregory said the owners acted in bad faith and that they have questions to answer.
One fan tried to tell Gregory he seemed upset. Bold move. The defensive end said he owed fans nothing and that the group is “toxic.”
In this tweet, a fan tried to claim that Dallas paid Gregory during a suspension. Gregory said that wasn’t true. This particular fan had a lot to say, but unfortunately some of the tweets have since been deleted. Yahoo Sports was able to capture some screenshots. The fan posted a screenshot of an article talking about how the Cowboys kept Gregory around despite his suspensions and gave him a signing bonus during a previous restructuring of his contract. Gregory’s response was “Nope you’re wrong again lol how y’all fans think y’all know more about my situation than I do?!”
Many fans of other teams came to Gregory’s defense saying that the Cowboys fans were wrong to think the defender owed them anything. One guy even asked if Gregory would ever return to the “most valuable franchise,” and his response really said it all.
Whether you blame Gregory or the front office, the reality is that players shouldn’t be so incredibly relieved to leave your team. The Joneses didn’t get the job done and now they have a former player publically telling the world how much of an issue their franchise is. Not a great look for Stephen and Jerry.
