Cowboys let DeMarcus Lawrence down by not signing Von Miller

Although the Dallas Cowboys lost out on the chance to keep Randy Gregory, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is staying put in Dallas. Lawrence signed a three-year, $40 million contract with the Cowboys with $30 million guaranteed. A day after the deal was signed, the defender went on the “All Things Covered” podcast (full interview here) hosted by Patrick Peterson and Bryant McFadden.

Lawrence said he was sad to see the departure of Gregory but was excited about the prospect of adding new players to the newly successful Dallas defense. One player who was linked to the Cowboys by NFL Media’s Jane Slater was two-time Super Bowl champion Von Miller. Peterson and McFadden asked Lawrence if he would welcome a guy like Miller to Dallas. The DE quickly replied with, “Of course, fam.”

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Many thought Miller was between the Cowboys and the Rams, but Ian Rapoport reported that the veteran defender would instead be headed to the Buffalo Bills on a six-year, $120 million deal.

Another loss for Dallas. It’s hard to imagine any team or player wouldn’t be excited to add an eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, and former Super Bowl MVP to their roster. Miller would have added veteran and championship-caliber experience to the Cowboys, and Lawrence knew that. Lawrence said that he’d be happy to welcome any person that would help the team get to a higher level of play.

"“He’s a great defensive end. I mean, shoot. We’d be lucky to get Von. I’d be happy to play with Von. So, we’ll see what’s up,” said Lawrence."

McFadden pointed out that Miller’s age certainly doesn’t seem to be stopping him. The 32-year-old was able to sack Joe Burrow in the Super Bowl with no problem. McFadden said the combination of Micah Parsons, Lawrence, and Miller would be quite the trifecta. He jokingly said that they’d all have to fight for sacks since they are all so skilled at getting to the quarterback quickly.

The Cowboy replied by saying that’s the best situation to be in. “If you ain’t got no competition, you ain’t going to work hard enough,” Lawrence added. He then joked that the first man that gets to the quarterback always misses so it would be nice to have all three guys there and ready to attack.

After the Gregory debacle, Cowboys fans were hoping and wishing the team would be able to add Miller. So, now what? With a big gap to fill and several linebackers signed away, who will the Cowboys replace Gregory with?
