Every year it seems as though the Dallas Cowboys salary cap always becomes the biggest issue hindering them from going out and signing big-name free agents. This year is no different as the Cowboys will be once again looking to re-sign their own free agents over going out and spending money on players that may be an upgrade at certain spots on the roster.

As the front office continues to lean on defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence taking a pay cut and letting go of key guys like Amari Cooper to save cap space, they will have to do their homework on other free agents they believe they can afford once free agency kicks off. With that being said, it’s time to take a look at who some of those bargain bin free agents are.

Not including their own free agents, the Cowboys will luckily have quite a few options to choose from on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football. Another thing working in their favor is the fact that this 2022 NFL Draft class is fairly deep at key positional needs. This may mean general managers will hold back on free agency and look to the draft to get their new talent.

For now, let’s take a look at some of the affordable free agents around the league who would make sense for the Cowboys. Since the team has both offensive and defensive needs, we have selected four offensive choices and four defensive choices. We will start with offense!

8 cheap free agents the Cowboys should consider this offseason

8. Tre’quan Smith, New Orleans Saints, Wide Receiver

Career Stats: 112 receptions, 1486 receiving yards, 13.3 yards per reception, 17 touchdowns

Smith has dealt with a few injuries in his career, which could be the main reason he is unable to garner a larger contract in free agency. However, Smith can bring to this team is something they’ve been missing: speed. With Amari Cooper heading to the Browns, adding the Saints WR as a possible third receiver would give the Cowboys speed on the outside to pair with Michael Gallup. It would also allow the team to keep receiver CeeDee Lamb in the slot where he’s most effective. New Orleans should be the biggest threat to re-sign Smith, but they may not be able to afford him. If they let him go, the Cowboys should consider swooping him up.
