Dallas Cowboys legendary executive Gil Brandt spent 29 years with the franchise. He was a highly regarded talent scout and personnel administrator from the time of the team’s inception in 1960. Brandt helped transform Dallas from an expansion team to America’s Team. His keen ability to spot talent helped him draft nine Cowboys players who would end up sitting alongside him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Basically, there are writers who know about football, and then there’s Brandt.

When NFL.com was created in 1995, Brandt became a historical and player analysis writer. He is widely regarded as a draft expert. Last week, the former Cowboys exec released an article stating ideal potential destinations for ten of this year’s top free agents. On his list was Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz. The writer believes the much-improved tight end would be a good fit for the Los Angeles Chargers.

The reality is that Schultz would be a great fit for any team looking for a tight end. The former backup tight end was a consistent target for Dak Prescott after Blake Jarwin sustained a hip injury. Schultz didn’t look like a backup. In fact, he is only the second player in Cowboys history other than Jason Witten to have over 70 receptions and over 800 yards in a single season. Because of his breakout performance, many are saying that he has outpriced himself from the Cowboys budget.

While there was some talk about putting Schultz on the franchise tag, several reports have said that is unlikely. Any team would be glad to have a competitor like this Cowboy on their roster.

Former Cowboys executive and Hall of Famer says Dalton Schultz would be a good fit for the Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have a hardworking, promising, and talented quarterback in Justin Herbert. With the second-highest available cap space in the NFL, the Chargers would be wise to add consistent receivers for Herbert to throw to. Schultz could be one of those weapons. Here is why Brandt thinks Schultz could head to LA:

"“Schultz sure could make life easier for Herbert as a replacement for veteran free agent Jared Cook. Last season, Schultz bested Cook in receiving yards (808 to 564), receiving TDs (eight to four), passer rating when targeted (118.6 to 74.6) and catch rate over expectation (+3.7% to -4.9%, per Next Gen Stats). He was also a bit more surehanded, credited by PFF with just three drops, as opposed to Cook’s seven, which were the most in the NFL by a tight end.” – Gil Brandt, NFL.com"

Schultz is highly respected by the coaching staff, front office, and Cowboys fans. While the team would be sad to lose him, the tight end deserves a chance to be a starting tight end in 2022. He may be doing that in a powder blue jersey rather than a navy blue one.
