The Dallas Cowboys are really in a tough position this offseason with a total of 24 free agents set to hit the market and limited cap space with the team currently sitting at about $21 million over the cap. They will need to get that to a manageable number, something we’ve seen COO Stephen Jones creatively do each year in order to create space for players they’d like to sign or re-sign in the offseason.

One of the many players the Cowboys could possibly lose is wide receiver Michael Gallup whose late-season ACL tear may or may not give the Cowboys the opportunity to retain him. They also have their fourth and fifth receivers in Cedrick Wilson and Noah Brown both going into free agency as well.

Because of this, the Cowboys may be in the market for a few receivers. In the meantime, we will focus on replacements for Gallup. With his defense stretching and playmaking ability, the Cowboys so desperately need to keep this offense clicking on all cylinders.

With that being said, let’s get into who the Cowboys could target in free agency to replace Gallup. And, no JuJu Smith-Schuster is not on this list because the Cowboys won’t be able to afford him no matter what he says to the media. Sorry.

Wilson should be an obvious choice for the Cowboys if Gallup were to leave in free agency as he’s already familiar with the offense they run and performed well during Gallup’s absence due to injuries throughout the season. Wilson has shown the ability to find soft spots in the defense and give quarterback Dak Prescott an easy target to hit.

The receiver has also shown that he’s able to make the tougher catches while being contested at times during the season. The only drawback is that Wilson hasn’t consistently shown he can be the deep threat that Gallup is, though not for a lack of trying, as Wilson put up a respectable 13.4 yards per reception this season.

Wilson, who ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash at his NFL Combine, isn’t actually much slower than Gallup who ran a 4.4-second 40 during his combine. It might just take a few tweaks in their playcalling to have Wilson stretch the field and give Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb space to work the middle of the field.
