Sean Payton can’t help himself from coaching Cowboys in TV breakdown

Ever since Sean Payton told the New Orleans Saints that he was leaving the organization, the sports world has gone into a frenzy over what he is going to do next. Will he head to the broadcast booth? Will he take a year’s vacation? Will he coach another team in the future? Is that team the Dallas Cowboys? Payton didn’t really deny any of those possibilities.

On Thursday, Payton appeared on the Dan Patrick Show to talk about his future. Patrick tried to ask him if teams had reached out to him or where he may want to coach, but Payton wouldn’t reveal much. He did say that two teams had reached out “via back channels.” But when Patrick said, “if I guess who will you tell me,” Payton said no. Darn.

However, the former head coach did say that he felt excited that several broadcasting companies had reached out to him about a television future. He says that is where his focus is.

So, as a long-time broadcaster, Patrick put him to the test. The host asked the budding broadcaster to give an analysis on how the Chiefs accomplished what they did in the Divisional Round in 13 seconds. Payton gave an attempt, and Patrick wasn’t loving it. Probably not a good start to your TV career if one of the longest-standing sports broadcasters in the game isn’t thrilled with your breakdown.

Then, the coach said, “well ask me about the end of the Cowboys game and let me see if I can do better.” Is this a teaser of Payton breaking down changes Dallas needs to make?!

Here’s how Payton would’ve done things differently:

"“Look they’re trying to get in touchdown range and they ran a draw. We would typically throw a pass and down, down. Ultimately, I think two more steps for Dak. He’s got to slide a little quicker. He’s up and the ball has to go to the umpire. And then let’s go. We can never hand the ball to the center.”"

“I like it,” said Patrick. Yup. Cowboys fans would have liked to see that rather than what happened too, Dan.

While Payton seems to claim throughout the entire interview that broadcasting is his plan, a return to coaching almost seems inevitable for the 58-year-old. Remember that if any team wanted to formally interview the former New Orleans coach, that team would need permission from the Saints because he is still under contract. However, Payton says a team could gauge his interview via “back channels”… whatever that means.

Payton won’t be getting paid by New Orleans, but his contract with the team lasts for the next three seasons. So, if Jerry Jones wants him, he would have to negotiate some form of compensation with the Saints (which we all know he’d do in a heartbeat).

You can watch the full interview between the two in the link above. It is pretty entertaining.
