The Dallas Cowboys have officially reached the point where they have to deal with the downside of having a great NFL season. In this copycat league, it is no surprise that successful teams have to fend off would-be coaching poachers. The NFL is a funny business, and you can only shake your head when you see how fast a rise and fall can happen.

It has been roughly 15 months since the Atlanta Falcons fired Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their head coach. Yet here we find ourselves wondering if he will become the leading man for another organization.

I give credit to Quinn as he has said all the right things about his tenure here in Dallas. But with only 32 of these jobs available in the world, it has to be awfully tempting for him to take a head coaching job elsewhere.

I would like to say that Quinn declining an interview with Jacksonville could be viewed as a good sign that he is happy where he is in Dallas.

It could also be a sign that Quinn will not just accept any coaching situation. Fit may be more important this time around at this point of his career. Either way, I hope Jerry Jones realizes that his DC is due a pay raise if he does stay.

There are several open head coaching destinations that worry me and should worry the Cowboys faithful as well. I have always said that “procrastination is the thief of time,” and Dallas might want to begin preliminary discussions about who could take over the defense in the event of a departure.

There are currently seven head coaching jobs available, but these three ball clubs stand out in the pursuit of Quinn.
