Dallas Cowboys Spooky Game Part 1: Which 8 players are gone at season’s end?
By Angel Torres
Wide receiver Michael Gallup has been the subject of trade speculation simply because most of us do not think the Cowboys will have enough cap space to keep him on an extension. I would love for this team to figure out a way and keep him but with so many needs and questions surrounding multiple free agents, I simply do not think it’s possible.
Landing a compensatory is nice and although I would like to trade Gallup for something that can help the team now, his importance to this season is going to be worth more than what could be brought back on a return. I believe the Cowboys have a window to compete for a championship this year. As much as the analytics and general managers might say, going for it has to bear weight on this conversation.
Dallas Cowboys: Let’s Play the Game
Would you send Michael Gallup and a third-round pick to New York for Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams? Defensive tackle doesn’t seem to be a big problem for Dallas right now but even with reinforcements on the way, what could an interior defensive line rotation of Williams, Neville Gallimore, and Osa Odigizuwa look like?
Sprinkle in some Brent Urban and Quinton Bohanna and all of a sudden the defensive tackle room is chock full of talent. If Gallup is going to leave anyway, why not get something for him? The New York Jets are in a downward spiral so giving up assets for the future might be in their best interest.
Dallas Cowboys: The Verdict
I am not 100% convinced that Gallup is leaving via free agency after the season. He has only once broken the 1,000-yard receiving barrier and this latest injury puts him well beyond the pace once again. I like wideout Cedrick Wilson and I think he could start in place if Gallup was to depart but I would hold onto Gallup and see what happens at season’s end.
I also want the Cowboys to go all in this season and a healthy Gallup at the end of the year could be extremely useful. The upcoming NFL draft crop of wide receivers this year isn’t as strong as the previous two years so Gallup’s value could be inflated but his worth now feels more important.
Something tells me to keep him and see what happens at the end of the year. It might not be the best strategy for the Cowboys but I’m not sure if I could give up on Gallup at this point. I say keep him but what do you say?
