Could Jayron Kearse join a growing list of free-agent safeties that haven’t worked out in Dallas? Last year, it was former first-rounder Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. And the year before, George Iloka. Is Kearse destined to join the dreaded one-and-done curse in Big D?

Not helping the veteran safety’s chances is the fact the Cowboys also signed more highly-touted safeties Damontae Kazee and Malik Hooker in free agency. The team already had safeties Donovan Wilson, Darian Thompson, and Steven Parker on the roster. Then they drafted South Carolina cornerback Israel Mukuamu and moved him to safety.

Kearse is an impressive 6-foot-4 and 215-pound veteran who started a career-high seven games for the Detroit Lions in 2020. He racked up 59 total tackles, two pass deflections, and forced a fumble. Unfortunately, he did so on a Lions’ defense that ranked dead last in the NFL in allowed yardage to opposing offenses (6,716) and average points per game (32.4).

A seventh-round selection by the Minnesota Vikings in 2016, Jayron Kearse made his bones in the NFL playing special teams. Perhaps those abilities alone will be enough to save him a spot on the Dallas Cowboys’ final 53, but he certainly has plenty of competition to stave off.
