The Cowboys signed former Washington tight end Jeremy Sprinkle presumably to compete for the third spot on the depth chart behind dueling starters in Blake Jarwin and Dalton Schultz. But the emergence of second-year tight end Sean McKeon this summer likely means Sprinkle is in danger of not even making the final roster in Dallas.

Of course, the Cowboys could always decide to keep four tight ends on their final 53 come September. And with Jarwin coming off a season-ending ACL injury, that might make sense. But it seems more likely the team will choose to address other more pressing needs for depth like their offensive line.

Fans will remember Sprinkle from his time with their divisional rivals, the Washington Football Team. The former fifth-round selection out of Arkansas in 2017 played the last four seasons in Washington, starting a total of 33 games. His career stats include bring in 34 total receptions for 301 yards and three touchdowns.

Sprinkle was a core special teams player in Washington and could fill that same niche in Dallas. The 27-year old played more than 50% of the Football Team’s special teams snaps for each of the past three seasons. So if Sprinkle is going to stick in Big D, that’s probably why.
