The Cowboys desperately needed to add experience and quality depth to their offensive tackle position this offseason. That after the team lost starting right tackle La’el Collins for the entire season due to a hip injury. And Dallas only had starting left tackle Tyron Smith for two games due to a neck injury as well.

The answer provided by the Cowboys’ front office was signing 35-year old Ty Nsekhe. Unfortunately, it appears Dallas might have once again struck out in the free agency market as the slow-footed Nsekhe failed to impress in the team’s first preseason game.

While Nsekhe’s NFL experience as a backup might save him from the Turk in Dallas, the team could simply decide to move on from his modest $1.75 million salary-cap hit in 2021. The Cowboys might instead look to their young offensive tackles like fourth-round rookie Josh Ball, Terrence Steele, and Brandon Knight to fill those reserve roles. Both Steele and Knight started significant games for the team in 2020.

If Nsekhe fails to impress the rest of the summer, don’t be surprised to see the Cowboys scouring the waiver wire at the end of this month hoping to find a veteran swing tackle with something left in the tank.
