The Dallas Cowboys kicked off the preseason in the Hall of Fame game last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. And over the weekend, the team held a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams.

Now, well into training camp, we are getting a sense of which players are making the most of their opportunities. While many fans focus only on the bigger names, there are a few surprises all should be aware of. Here are three sleepers worth keeping tabs on throughout the rest of training camp and future preseason games.

The Cowboys were certainly hoping someone would emerge as a candidate to take one of the starting jobs at cornerback from Trevon Diggs, Anthony Brown, or Jourdan Lewis. Most seemed to believe that would likely be second-round rookie Kelvin Joseph. And while Joseph has had a solid camp, the real star for this position has been Maurice Canady.

Canady joined the Cowboys on a one-year deal last offseason but opted out due to the pandemic. So this is the first chance many have had to see the four-year veteran corner who spent his first three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. And so far he’s been outstanding.

The 27-year old only has four NFL starts under his belt, but has played like a starter in Dallas this summer making eye-popping plays and racking up several interceptions at camp. In fact, Canady had the most impressive defensive play against the Rams over the weekend, making a terrific athletic play to snag an interception from quarterback Matthew Stafford.

If Canady continues this level of play, don’t be surprised if he overtakes Brown or Lewis for a starting role in the secondary this upcoming season.
