The Cowboys offensive line depth looks suspect

The Cowboys offensive line struggled on Thursday night. As a result, the team’s backup quarterbacks were pressured heavily all game long and sacked four times, fumbling twice.

Depth was an area Dallas should have addressed much better in the offseason following a year where their offensive line was decimated by injuries. Instead, the cap-strapped Cowboys have elected to pin their hopes on this unit’s overall health.

One of their cheaper solutions for their depth issues is to experiment with making Connor Williams the team’s primary backup at center. He did have one notable bad snap in this game.

But the biggest offender of the night was likely center Braylon Jones, who was called for two holding penalties in the exhibition.

It did not appear to be a good night for offensive tackle Brandon Knight either. At times it was hard to believe this was the same player who started nine games in place of All-Pro Tyron Smith at left tackle last season.

Entering this first preseason game, we suspected that the Dallas Cowboys offensive line depth was below average once again. By the end of the night, we knew it. At this point, I’m not sure the team can do much about it other than hope for their starters to stay healthy all year long and pray that a cheap upgrade or two falls into their laps via the waiver wire or free agency at some point.
