Jabril Cox, LB to S

The Cowboys have too many talented linebackers. And that’s a good problem to have. Currently, Micah Parsons, Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch, Keanu Neal, and Jabril Cox all figure to be locks to make the final roster.

But finding them all playing time has some wondering if shifting the rookie Cox to safety could solve two problems in one move. After all, the Cowboys could certainly use the additional talent boost at safety with former sixth-rounder Donovan Wilson and free-agent signee Damontae Kazee coming off an Achilles injury figured to be the starters when the season kicks off.

With Cox being an excellent coverage linebacker, his skills would seemingly translate well to safety. Especially when you consider he registered three interceptions at LSU just last season. And at 6-foot-3, 233-pounds, you’d figure he has the frame and linebacker mentality to become an effective tackler.

But the rookie’s run defense and ability to diagnose plays are big question marks coming into the NFL. So, attempting to force Cox to learn a new position while also making the difficult leap to the pros may be a case of too much, too soon.
