Cornerback

The cornerback market is one that has not seen a dip in earnings. The Dallas Cowboys balked at paying cornerback Byron Jones $16 million a year but we have seen a division rival recently pay released Tennesee cornerback Adoree Jackson an average of $13 million.

Minnesota gave Patrick Peterson a one-year $10 million deal which is really surprising to see. I know that most everyone has penciled in Patrick Surtain II as the tenth pick in the draft but with Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley recently undergoing back surgery, I am starting to doubt whether Surtain will be there at ten for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys have to adjust their thought process and consider bringing in a veteran if they can find a happy medium. Richard Sherman almost comes immediately to mind but paying Sherman top dollar is something I’m not sure the team is comfortable doing.

The longer Sherman is out on the market the better the news for Dallas but I will say bringing in Sherman will no doubt cost more than some people think.

Another option that is still available is Casey Hayward who also has familiarity with the head coach but he is older at 32 years of age. Hayward is especially interesting considering he wouldn’t count against the compensatory calculation as he was released by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Malcolm Butler is also hanging out there but I think the money he is looking for almost immediately takes the Cowboys out of the running. Janoris Jenkins and A.J. Bouye are still looking for work but I doubt any of those guys will move the needle enough for the Cowboys to pay what the market is currently dictating.

Bouye also has to finish off his suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing policy and won’t be available until week three.

This position is especially difficult to gauge as there are a few names out there but they will all cost above what Dallas has paid out so far this offseason.
