Grading the Cowboys free agency signings so far
Tarell Basham, DE – Grade: B-
With the future of defensive end Aldon Smith in the air as he’s currently an unrestricted free agent, the Cowboys needed to make a move to secure their pass rushers beyond DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory.
They do so here with the signing of Tarell Basham on a modest two-year deal worth up to $6.5 million, according to reports. He racked up 3.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits for the New York Jets last season as a nine-game starter. Basham is a quality addition to the pass-rushing rotation in Dallas and could reach his potential under the tutelage of new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
Brent Urban, DT – Grade: B+
The Cowboys needed a quality run defender to man the interior of their defensive line. And they have apparently found one in the massive 6-foot-7, 300-pound Brent Urban.
Pro Football Focus gave Urban a high overall grade of 83.7 for his run defense in 2020 with the Chicago Bears. The Windy City ranked 15th against the run last year, allowing 113.4 yards on the ground per game. Urban’s play could be the key to the defensive resurgence in Dallas this season.
