The next position on the agenda will no doubt be what to do at free safety. There is talk that the Dallas Cowboys will try and reunite with an old Dan Quinn favorite from Atlanta by signing safety Keanu Neal but I am lukewarm on that idea.

Sure, it would help to have a former player and respected veteran come into the locker room and assist with the verbiage of the new defense but he is an older more expensive version of what safety Donovan Wilson already is. Wilson made some plays playing free safety for the Cowboys last year but the wear and tear of a hard-hitting strong safety have effects.

The effect it has had on Neal is injuries which have resulted in him missing 32 games in his first five seasons. Playing Wilson at strong safety and pursuing Anthony Harris next week would give the Cowboys a sneaky good safety tandem. Sure Harris played alongside fellow star safety Harrison Smith but Harris’ ability to keep the back end covered allowed Smith to excel closer to the line of scrimmage.

With the three other top safeties already franchise tagged, this option is going to be very expensive and competitive. This has turned into the least likely scenario as Harris would be the definition of paying great money to a good player.

If the Dallas Cowboys can convince Harris to take slightly less than their competitors, this addition would be one that could allow the Dallas Cowboys the opportunity to take more chances upfront by knowing the backend will be covered.
