Cowboys drafting for defense in the first round makes sense

The Dallas Cowboys can not be in a better position to select one of the best players in this year’s draft class. With the 10th overall pick, the Cowboys can go many different routes including drafting a cornerback, offensive lineman, or even defensive end.

It’s hard to determine what exactly Dallas’ draft board looks like. After going just 6-10 last season, this team isn’t used to selecting this high up in the draft.

In the last 15 years, Dallas only picked three times inside the top 10. The most recent one was in 2016 when the Cowboys selected running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall pick. They also selected cornerback Morris Claiborne sixth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft and tackle Tyron Smith ninth overall the year prior.

It’s safe to assume that this is unfamiliar territory for the Cowboys’ organization. Even though this is the case, Dallas appears to be successful wherever they pick in the first round.

Out of their last 10 first-round selections, the Cowboys have drafted seven pro bowlers during that span. They have drafted players like center Travis Frederick, tackle Zack Martin, and cornerback Byron Jones.
