4 free agents who could make the Cowboys a playoff team
Leonard Williams, DT
Along with the safety position, the Cowboys have traditionally undervalued their defensive tackle position as well. Although, Dallas did use a third-round draft selection last year and a second-rounder the year before on the position.
Under new head coach Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys brought in former Pro Bowl defensive tackles, Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe, via free agency last offseason. And while McCoy suffered a season-ending quad injury in training camp and Poe was released midseason for poor play, the effort to spend significant salary-cap space to improve the interior of the defensive line was encouraging.
Perhaps the Cowboys will once again bring in a heralded defensive tackle to attempt to improve a defense that allowed 158.8 rushing yards per game last year, the second-most in the NFL. The best run defender scheduled to hit free agency next month is likely Leonard Williams.
The former sixth-overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, Williams was traded by the New York Jets to the Giants in 2019 and played for the G-Men on the franchise tag last year. Racking up a career-high 11.5 sacks and an incredible 30 QB hits as a 12-game starter in the Big Apple,
Leonard Williams is an excellent run defender who would instantly transform the interior of the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line if signed and could undoubtedly make them a playoff contender in the lowly NFC East division in 2021.
