Predictions for Cowboys top six free agents this offseason
Xavier Woods, S
Selected in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Xavier Woods has certainly exceeded his draft roots. The Cowboys starter at safety over the past three seasons, Woods has outperformed most Day Three selections. Yet, his play has been unremarkable.
The story of Woods’ play in Dallas can best be described as the very definition of mediocre. While his play is adequate at times, not allowing many big plays to be made on him, he also provides little in the way of making big plays himself.
As a 15-game starter in 2020, Woods failed to record a single interception for the first time in his career. He had a single pass deflection and allowed a 79.3 completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks, his highest in three seasons. Woods would end last year posting 72 total tackles and two tackles for loss.
The emergence of safety Donovan Wilson this past season makes Woods expendable. Although that decision will be up to by new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, how he feels about the pending free agent’s play, and if he believes he can coach up Woods to become a more consistent playmaker.
Prediction: Xavier Woods is allowed to test free agency and signs with another team. The Dallas Cowboys sign a free-agent veteran themselves to pair with Donovan Wilson while also drafting a rookie safety to groom for a future role.
