Cowboys can look to Texans for how not to handle Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of what seems like the ultimate game of cat and mouse. Every day, it seems, we hear new reporting about what their plans are or how Dak Prescott is feeling.

Unfortunately, we haven’t heard the news of him putting pen to paper or them offering him a long term deal. What’s taking so long?

We all know that if you don’t have a quarterback, you have nothing. We experienced a bit of that this past season until Andy Dalton could get his sea legs back up under him and even when he went down with an injury for a small window.

We also have seen what can happen when relationships between quarterbacks and their current teams grow to beyond repair. While the namesake of this conversation, the Houston Texans and Deshaun Watson, are the most vivid examples, you can also look to Detroit and Matt Stafford.

Although slightly different in all three cases, Deshaun over feeling betrayed, Stafford over feeling overwhelmed, and Dak over feeling undervalued, so to speak, they are all representative of the same issue.

These quarterbacks are promised and told certain things to make them happy and then because the organization feels as though that means that they belong to them, they proceed to do exactly what they want to and even if it isn’t what they promised they would do.

That’s how you end up with a disgruntled quarterback and ultimately a trade request. Let’s try to avoid that, will we, Cowboys?

How is this big of an “oversight” possible? How do you leave the guy that’s supposed to be the face of your franchise off of a hype video for that team?

These are the types of things that eventually lead to a guy feeling undervalued, underappreciated, and wanting not to be where he is. They have to be better.

If they are going to get the deal done, just get it done already. Don’t give him the moon, understandably, but don’t play hardball just for the heck of it all.

We know the market dictates price. So, if the market dictates a certain number, that’s what you have to do.

Enough with the nuance. Enough with the back and forth. Enough with the uncertainty already. If they continue to go about it as they are, they’ll eventually end up like the Houston Texans.

That’s with one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league on your roster, that doesn’t want to be there anymore. Let’s not be those guys.
