Should the Cowboys consider trading away these four players?
Dalton Schultz, TE
From a potential roster cut to a 14-game starter, the career of tight end Dalton Schultz flipped on its head last season. That after starting tight end Blake Jarwin suffered a season-ending ACL in Week One.
After posting a terrific performance in training camp, Schultz stepped up to assume the role as the Cowboys’ top tight end and excelled. Targeted 89 times, the 24-year old brought in 63 catches for 615 yards and four touchdowns. He also established himself as one of the bright, young up-and-coming players at his position.
That’s a stark contrast to his play from the previous season where Schultz was widely ignored. He was targeted just twice in 2019, playing only 10% of the offensive snaps behind Jarwin and the legendary Jason Witten.
While trading away Schultz just as he’s found his stride seems unwise, his value may never be higher. Dallas signed Jarwin to a four-year, $22 million contract last March, cementing him as their starting tight end for the foreseeable future.
As a fourth-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Dalton Schultz is entering the final year of his rookie deal with the Dallas Cowboys. And it’s unclear if the team is willing or will be able to re-sign him after this season. If there is a trade market for Schultz, it’s now as his value is likely to only decrease playing behind Blake Jarwin once again.
