5 safeties the Cowboys could dive into free agency for
By Angel Torres
Marcus Williams
New Orleans safety Marcus Williams is probably best known for dipping his head to deliver a knockout blow but missing then Minnesota Vikings wideout Stefon Diggs who miraculously turned and ran into the end zone on the final play catapulting the Vikings into the NFC Championship game.
The “Minneapolis Miracle “ was no doubt preventable but that play has also overshadowed what has been a very good career up to this point for a young player who made a colossal mistake.
Williams no doubt has regrets about that moment but his inspiring play is nothing to scoff at. Williams has been one of the best safeties in the game today and has plenty of playoff experience at such a young age that interest should be at its peak this offseason.
Williams could be closely watching what quarterback Drew Brees decides to do this offseason before he decides on his own future. If Brees decides to retire, he could opt to join a team that has an established quarterback.
Playing football for a team that has a black hole at the quarterback position is a place Williams is not accustomed to. Williams has played in the postseason in each of his four seasons in the league so winning could be near the top of his demand list.
I know the Cowboys have not been regular postseason players but re-signing Prescott and loading up on defense could swing the pendulum in the Cowboy’s favor.
Williams was also a second-round pick so landing what could be a lucrative deal could also be his only agenda. If a bidding war breaks out, I would expect the Dallas Cowboys to have a set dollar amount they won’t go over and bow out if the demands get too high.
Dan Quinn is very familiar with this player after coaching in the same division as Williams. Did Williams make enough of an impression on Quinn to jump on the table for him or will the Cowboys be essentially non-players for this talented player?
I believe this is the unlikeliest fit amongst this safety group and I expect another team to simply outbid everyone else for his services.
