Cowboys parting ways with Mike Nolan, Jim Tomsula
The Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with their defensive coordinator
At times this past season, the Dallas Cowboys fielded the worst defense in their franchise’s history. And now the Cowboys have decided to move on from their defensive coordinator and defensive line coach after a single season.
It’s being widely reported that the Cowboys have fired defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. And the dismissals might continue soon as Dallas could look to dismantle their entire defensive coaching staff and rebuild it from the ground up.
Undoubtedly Nolan and his defensive coaches faced a difficult and unprecedented challenge this past offseason due to the impact of COVID-19. Offseason training activities and workouts were replaced by virtual meetings while the Cowboys’ new coaching staff attempted to install a new defensive scheme. The cancellation of the entire preseason and a truncated training camp didn’t aid their cause.
The results spoke for themselves during the regular season as the defense allowed an average of 32.7 points to opposing offenses through their first 12 games. That average dropped to 20.0 points per contest over their final four games, which included a three-game winning streak.
Despite the defensive improvement shown over the last month of the season, the Cowboys have decided to make significant changes to their coaching staff regardless. And now the attention turns to whom Dallas might hire to fill the defensive coordinator position.
The answer could lie within the team’s current coaching staff. George Edwards is currently the Cowboys Senior Defensive Assistant. But he previously held the position of defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-2019. That past experience plus his current relationship within the organization makes Edwards the most likely candidate for promotion.
Yet, there is also a slew of defensive coordinators and potential DC candidates currently making the interview rounds between NFL franchises. The Dallas Cowboys have likely already started eyeing potential candidates and could easily land a top name if they wished. Stay tuned.
