The Cowboys top 3 free agency signings of 2020
Despite some major misses, the Dallas Cowboys hit some free agency home runs
The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2020 offseason hoping to go in an exciting new direction. With a new head coach in Mike McCarthy and a revamped coaching staff, the Cowboys headed into free agency hoping to upgrade an 8-8 team into a playoff contender.
Unfortunately, Dallas had some epic free agency bad luck this season. Names like defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, cornerback Daryl Worley, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, and defensive tackle Dontari Poe are all no longer on the roster.
But despite the Cowboys having some of their worst free agency misses in franchise history, they’ve also had some big hits. Here are the top three …
#1. Andy Dalton, QB
When the Cowboys signed Andy Dalton, the move was viewed as the organization adding the top backup quarterback in the NFL to their roster. And while the three-time Pro Bowler had a tough start filling-in for an injured Dak Prescott, Dalton’s improved play has been a huge part of the team’s current three-game winning streak that has kept their slim playoff hopes alive. Dalton has thrown for 771 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception over that span.
#2. Aldon Smith, DE
Although he hasn’t recorded a sack since Week Eight, defensive end Aldon Smith did rack up 4.0 sacks in his first three games for the Cowboys. And his initial play was a major surprise considering he last played in the NFL back in 2015. While his impact has lessened over the last few weeks, the 31-year old Smith has proven he can still play at a high level and is worthy of another contract in Dallas.
#3. Greg Zuerlein, K
In Greg Zuerlein, the Dallas Cowboys have landed their most talented kicker since Dan Bailey. Although the 2017 Pro Bowler has been far from perfect, missing seven field-goal attempts and three extra-point tries so far this season. Yet, six of those missed field goal attempts came from 50-yards or further out.
