5 prospects the Dallas Cowboys should keep their eye on

With the season coming to a close, it’s time to look at the upcoming NFL Draft

The 2020 season is pretty much over for the Dallas Cowboys. It is that time of the year when we shift our focus to the upcoming NFL draft. A good draft could be what makes this team over the top.

While the draft positions aren’t set in stone yet, we have a good idea of where the Cowboys would draft. They currently sit at the fourth overall spot and can draft as low as eighth overall. Let’s take a look at some prospects that could be available for Dallas to draft.

The Dallas Cowboys have a reputable offensive line. It consists of two first-team All-Pros and one soon to be Pro Bowl lineman. Of course, that is not what it looks like this season.

Offensive tackles Tyron Smith and La’el Collins missed the majority of the season due to injuries. Longtime starter at center Travis Frederick retired during the offseason.

The replacement at center Joe Looney missed four games, and right guard Zack Martin is on track to miss four games this season. Add in the countless depth linemen injured, and the offensive line was beyond depleted this season.

All the players are expected to return and should be100 percent healthy next season. That doesn’t mean the Cowboys can’t begin grooming their future replacements. Most notably, Smith is 30-years-old and missed 24 games in the past five seasons. By the end of the season, it will be 26 games.

A great candidate to add would be a future replacement for Tyron. Who would be better than Oregon’s Penei Sewell?

The Cincinnati Bengals have an opportunity to draft him, but he could slide to the number four spot for Dallas. That is if the Cowboys end up with that draft spot.

The top draft pick is 6’6 and 330 pounds. That is one inch taller and 10 pounds heavier than Smith. Who better for Sewell to learn from than a seven-time Pro Bowler?

NFL.com’s Daniel Jerimiah has high praise for the left tackle. So much that he almost had no constructive criticism for him, other than having his hands a little two wide against a 2020 top-ten draft pick. 

Come to the start of the season; he will be 21-years-old. That is great for the Cowboys as he will be a long-term solution for the team. A young prospect with great size and potential training under the wing of a reputable veteran sounds like a recipe for success.

Some people will look at this as a wasted pick since it is not an immediate need. They would rather the team draft a player to start immediately. That helps the team in their current season and down the road.

The chances of Sewell being available outside the top-five are slim. If he is still on the board by the time the Cowboys are on the clock, owner Jerry Jones will have that signature smile on his face. He would have a tough time not drafting the lineman.
