Although fans had high hopes, no one knew exactly what to expect from defensive end Aldon Smith when he surprisingly signed with the Cowboys this offseason. In fact, based on the fact Smith hadn’t played in the NFL since 2015 due to being suspended by the NFL, it wasn’t even known if he’d make it to the field for regular season play.

Yet, the former All-Pro did make it and has shined, racking up 4.0 sacks in his first three games with the Cowboys. Now, Smith’s production has cooled as the season has progressed, recording only one sack in his last 10 games. And that was to be expected following his extended absence and a lack of a true offseason program this year.

Still, Smith has started all 14 games for Dallas this season. And in his previous matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, he did recover a fumble and return it 78-yards for a defensive touchdown.

Following his hot start with the Cowboys, it was believed Smith, who is only on a one-year contract in Dallas, would be too expensive to retain beyond this season. But his lack of production since and the fact the Cowboys took a chance on him may make his remaining with America’s Team beyond this season a much bigger possibility.
