While many have earmarked cornerback Chidobe Awuzie as a pending unrestricted free agent that the Cowboys should attempt to re-sign this offseason, the fact he’s missed a whopping seven games this year has to put that into some doubt. After all, availability is the greatest ability in a physical sport like the NFL.

With cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis, C.J. Goodwin, and safety Xavier Woods scheduled to join Awuzie on the open market next March, Dallas figures to try to and retain someone to maintain some level of experience in their secondary.

Although the Cowboys’ new coaching staff could simply elect to move on as they already have cornerbacks Anthony Brown and an impressive rookie in Trevon Diggs to man their backfield. Adding a couple of key contributors via free agency and another strong draft class might be the preferred solution.

In the end, Chidobe Awuzie finds himself in a peculiar position with only five games left in this season. Not only is the 25-year old applying for a future role in Dallas, but also doing so for a potential future elsewhere. The former second-rounder could use a strong finish to 2020 to help improve his status either way.
