#4. Cam Newton, QB – Carolina Panthers

In trying to determine which quarterback scheduled to hit free agency the Cowboys might covet over re-signing Andy Dalton, there are a few names to consider. Veteran passers like Philip Rivers, Jameis Winston, Mitchell Trubisky, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Joe Flacco are all scheduled to hit to open market in 2021. But I’m not sure any would get the nod over Dalton.

One possible free agent to consider might be former league MVP and current quarterback for the New England Patriots, Cam Newton. Especially if you believe he can still get his old game back. The 31-year old passer spent the first nine years of his career with the Carolina Panthers and led them to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Newton is currently in his first season with the New England Patriots, with mixed results. The team currently has a record of 4-6. And Newton has thrown for 1,900 yards, four passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions with a solid completion percentage of 68.1 in nine games.

But the dual-threat quarterback also has 83 rushing attempts for 341 yards and nine more scores on the ground. Newton also has a touchdown reception this season.

Scheduled to be a free agent in 2021, is Cam Newton the ideal candidate to replace Dak Prescott in Dallas? No. But you are unlikely to find a more talented player on the open market next year. And that in itself could be a reason the Cowboys opt to simply make Prescott one of the highest-paid players in NFL history.
