This NFL insider believes a Dallas Cowboys’ rookie could have an All-Pro future

One of the lone bright spots for the 2-6 Dallas Cowboys this season has been the contributions made by their 2020 draft class. The majority of the Cowboys’ first-year draftees have been asked to play significant roles this year.

First-round selection CeeDee Lamb has emerged as one of the top receiving threats among his draft peers. Lamb has recorded 40 receptions for 524 yards and two touchdowns having started in six of his first eight games.

Third-round selection Neville Gallimore has seen a steady increase in snaps at the defensive tackle position this season. Gallimore got his first start in Week Seven against Washington and figures to see even more opportunities following the recent release of starter, Dontari Poe.

Fourth-round selection Tyler Biadasz has started the last four games for the Cowboys at center following a knee injury suffered by veteran Joe Looney. Pro Football Focus has credited Biadasz with allowing two sacks over his first 426 snaps.

But the hottest rookie following the team’s Week Eight matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles is cornerback Trevon Diggs. The Cowboys’ second-round selection out of Alabama not only led the team with six solo tackles against the Eagles, but he also recorded four pass deflections and posted the first two interceptions of his young career.

What made Diggs’ performance in Philly even more special was the fact the Cowboys’ defense had failed to record more than a single interception in their previous seven games … combined. Yet, the rookie defender was able to double that total is a single contest.

"“Trevon Diggs has All-Pro potential … he is routinely in a position to make plays on the ball. This is important to note because he will start making more plays as he becomes more experienced and clearly understands his responsibilities in coverage. With a little more seasoning, Diggs has a chance to be a great one on the island.”"

Following the loss of Pro Bowl cornerback Byron Jones to free agency this offseason, the Cowboys drafted Diggs hoping he’d become his eventual replacement. And injuries suffered at the cornerback position this season certainly accelerated that process, forcing the 22-year old to start in every game so far this season out of necessity.

Coming out of college, adjusting to the speed of the NFL is particularly difficult for first-year cornerbacks. And Trevon Diggs has had more obstacles to overcome than most due to a stunted offseason program and lack of any preseason games due to a worldwide pandemic.

And while there have been some early bumps in the road, that path appears to be leading to the same conclusion. The Dallas Cowboys found themselves a true Day Two steal in the talented Mr. Diggs.
