Is Dak Prescott now lost for the season after suffering an ankle injury?
After suffering a severe ankle injury against the New York Giants, is Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott lost for the season?
The Dallas Cowboys entered their Week Five game against the winless New York Giants looking for their second victory of the season. Instead, they may have lost their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, for the rest of the year.
Up 24-23 with just over six minutes left in the third quarter, the Cowboys’ passer gained nine yards on a run. Unfortunately, Prescott appeared to severely injure his ankle on the play. He had to be carted off the field as a sea of teammates swarmed their team leader, who was in tears.
Now the question is, has Prescott been lost for the season due to this injury? Backup Andy Dalton replaced Dak on the series, which ended with a rushing touchdown by running back Ezekiel Elliott.
Since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Prescott has not missed a single start as a professional. That streak of 69 straight regular-season starts will now end.
So far this season, Prescott was having the best start of his impressive career. Through four games, Dak had thrown for an incredible 1,690 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Against the Giants, Prescott had completed 14 of his 21 passes for 166 yards and one interception before the injury. Dak did get the first touchdown reception of his career earlier in the game.
This offseason, the majority of the talk surrounding America’s Team concerned the future of Prescott in Dallas. With his rookie contract ending following the 2019 campaign, Dak was scheduled to become a free agent in March. Instead, the Cowboys opted to use their franchise tag to retain the 27-year old passer at a cost of over $31 million.
If Dak Prescott is indeed out for the year after suffering a lower leg injury against the New York Giants on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys’ brass and coaching staff will have a chance to gauge their franchise without him under center for the first time. And that could very well determine Prescott’s future in Big D.
