After watching the Week 1 loss, the Dallas Cowboys must do something at right tackle

If you didn’t watch the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday, let me recap what happened to their offense quickly. The Los Angeles Rams exploited injuries at Dallas’ right tackle and threw future Hall of Famer, Aaron Donald, on the other side to collapse the offensive line.

Heading into the season with questions surrounding how new starting center Joe Looney would play, it was thought that others would step up to minimize any issues. Now with right tackle La’el Collins out until at least Week 4, what should the Cowboys do at right tackle?

To start the game, head coach Mike McCarthy opted to start undrafted rookie free agent Terence Steele. After seeing the Rams dominate him, the Cowboys put in Cameron Erving with hopes he would play better. He ended up getting injured, forcing Steele back into the right tackle spot.

For obvious reasons, something needs to be done to help out at that right tackle position. Is there an option out on the free-agent market? There are numerous offensive guards on the market, but not many tackles.

The biggest names of offensive tackles that remain on the market are Cordy Glenn, Jared Veldheer, and Jordan Mills.

Regardless of the lack of options, owner Jerry Jones was on 105.3 The Fan and said Dallas is “more than likely” to address the injuries from Week 1 with players on their roster for now.

Who on the Cowboys roster can fill in for the time being? There have been numerous injuries. Is anyone left? Well, Angel Torres of The Landry Hat came up with a good idea.

While Connor Williams plays at left guard right now, he played as a left tackle in college with the Texas Longhorns. In his second season with Texas, he was a consensus first-team All-American and first-team All-Conference.

The issue with him was that he got injured in his draft year, playing only five games. It is noted that while he played great in 2016, he didn’t look the same in 2017.

One of the main reasons he was shifted to the interior of the offensive line is because he lacks a long reach. At this point, the Cowboys don’t have much of an option.

I think that giving Williams a shot at playing on the outside as he has before will at least be better than what we have seen among the list of Collins’ backups. At the very least, he can fill in until Collins comes back for Week 4 (hopefully).

A little bit about Connor McGovern

Now, the next question is who is Connor McGovern? The Dallas Cowboys drafted the guard out of Penn State in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has yet to take a snap in the NFL.

His accolades include being a third-team All-Big Ten and nominated as the best offensive lineman for the team. While it’s not as much as Williams, it is still something.

He played as a right guard/center and is known for being a great run-blocker that needed work in pass protection. After sitting out all of 2019, maybe it’s time to see what he can do at the NFL level.

In all honesty, it can’t be all that much worse than what we saw on Sunday. If McGovern uses his big body to his advantage, then I am sure he will play better than the combo of Steele and Erving did. Hopefully, Williams can adapt to playing tackle again.

4 free agents the Dallas Cowboys should call right now. light. Hot
