4 free agents the Dallas Cowboys should call right now
Clay Matthews, Linebacker
In what’s being reported as a fractured collarbone, the Cowboys have lost their starting middle linebacker, Leighton Vander Esch, for a good portion of the regular season.
While Dallas does have veteran linebacker Joe Thomas to take Vander Esch’s place, and potentially Sean Lee after Week Three (currently on Injured Reserve), plus a promising young rookie in Francis Bernard on the practice squad, perhaps new head coach Mike McCarthy would like to have a player he’s more familiar with step in.
McCarthy was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers when the team drafted linebacker Clay Matthews in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Together, they would win a Super Bowl the following year. Matthews played for McCarthy for nearly a decade. In fewer words, they have history.
The 34-year old Matthew is a free agent and appears to be looking for the right situation to land. What better situation is there than with his old head coach and on America’s Team? Last season, Matthews recorded 37 tackles, 11 QB hits, and 8.0 sacks as a 13 game starter for the Rams, In Dallas, the six-time Pro Bowler would bring some much-needed experience and insurance to a linebacker corps that suddenly looks frail.
