Offense Must Convert Second Downs

Typically when you think of crucial conversions and downs, you think of 3rd down conversions. Well, in order to be a good team there, which the Dallas Cowboys need to be, they need to be a good team on 2nd down conversions.

While the philosophy is the same, the goal is slightly different. Whereas those on third down are to move the chains and gain a new set of downs, a “conversion” on second down is to make sure to put yourself in an optimal position to convert that third down.

At the very least, don’t allow yourself to lose yardage. The Cowboys found themselves there too many times on last season, at a lost or not moving after the second-down play, which led to long third-down tries, and ultimately big deficits to try to overcome on the scoreboard.

This should also help solve itself if they feed Ezekiel Elliott a bit more, the two or three yards a Zeke run has typically guaranteed is more than enough to put you in position for a convertible third down.

With that and again, they must convert their second downs to be successful this season. The third thing that they must do to be successful also fits a bit here too, under the conversion of second downs, but we will touch on that right now.
