Can quarterback Dak Prescott repeat his 2019 performance?
Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Dak Prescott had a career year last season, but can he do it again?
The Dallas Cowboys are set to open up their season with high expectations yet again. With a revamped coaching staff and key acquisitions during the off-season, the bar is set high by their fan-base. But the biggest key for success will reside on number four’s performances.
Last season Prescott had career-high marks in passing yards (4,902), passing touchdowns (30), and completions (388). However, that didn’t necessarily lead to team success. This gives me a reason to believe I’d rather see those numbers drop this season in exchange for wins.
With all of the surrounding talent the Cowboys possess on offense, including first-round draft pick, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb there shouldn’t be any reason he can’t repeat and I think statistically it will be very close.
The Biggest Key
For Prescott to be able to repeat his performance, he’s going to need the newly acquired offensive philosophy from head coach Mike McCarthy to turn some heads. Very similar to when Rams head coach Sean McVay first entered the league as a head coach.
Offensive minded coaches in their first year usually have high success because simply put, it’s new. The divisional opponents have to adapt and there isn’t recent film on what the offense is trying to do.
The new wrinkles that McCarthy and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore decide to throw in the offense will be the biggest key and that isn’t a surprise. But then again, Cowboys fans were used to the plain, old, vanilla offense under former coach Jason Garrett and fans still saw statistical success.
Does Prescott repeat? For the Cowboys to win football games more consistently I think they need to run their offense through running back Ezekiel Elliott. I am a big believer in running the football, controlling the clock, and playing good defense.
The Cowboys hopefully aren’t in positions where they are behind and must throw often. With that being said, the defense and special teams should also be better off this year, which will help the offense tremendously and not put them in bad field position.
Prescott should be able to take a step back with those upgrades and with the philosophy of feeding Zeke. So, I don’t think he sets new career marks or matches them this upcoming season. And if he does, it means the team isn’t winning a lot of football games. Similar to last season.
