Dallas Cowboys: 5 biggest surprises of training camp so far
Cedrick Wilson’s emergence
The Dallas Cowboys have one of the top wide receiver trios in the NFL with Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and rookie CeeDee Lamb. And with those three soaking up all the headlines, we don’t hear much about the depth chart behind them.
But one name that has emerged during training camp practices has been Cedrick Wilson Jr. The former sixth-round selection out of Boise State has been making his case for a spot on the final roster this season. In fact, some believe Wilson is the favorite for the fourth receiver role on the depth chart.
Back in 2018, Wilson figured to make an impact as a rookie. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury sidelined him before the season ever got started. Last year, Wilson failed to make it past final cuts, landing on the practice squad instead.
Wilson quickly got promoted to the active roster, playing in a total of six games in 2019. He was targeted eight times, bringing in five catches for 46 yards. Nearly a quarter of his 99 overall snaps were on special teams. Wilson ended his season on Injured Reserve in early December due to a knee injury.
Having quality depth on the roster will be a big determiner of team success this year more than ever in the NFL coming off an offseason stunted by a worldwide pandemic. And while it’s great for the Cowboys’ famous trio of starting receivers getting all the early praise, it’s good to know that there’s talent emerging behind them on the depth chart.
