Dallas Cowboys: 5 biggest surprises of training camp so far
Dallas Cowboys’ training camp has presented plenty of surprises. Here are five of the biggest.
With the regular season nearing, Dallas Cowboys‘ training camp is heating up. With just 19 days before their opener against the Los Angeles Rams, the Cowboys’ are attempting to prepare themselves as quickly as possible.
With camp well underway now, we’ve seen plenty of storylines coming out of The Star in Frisco. Here are five of the biggest surprises we’ve seen from Cowboys’ training camp so far.
Gerald McCoy’s Injury and Release
Arguably the Cowboys’ top free-agent signing this offseason was six-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy. His acquisition seemed to the biggest change in philosophy by the new coaching staff in Dallas, investing heavily in the defensive tackle position.
Yet, less than a month out from the start of the regular season, not only has McCoy been lost for the season due to a quad injury, he’s not even on the roster anymore. The Cowboys promptly released the 32-year old veteran despite signing him to a three-year, $18 million deal in March.
That kind of positional whiplash would send some NFL teams reeling. Fortunately for Dallas, they’ve spent two high draft picks on defensive tackles in Trysten Hill and Neville Gallimore over the past two years. And the team needs these young players to step up and take more meaningful roles in the wake of McCoy’s release.
